Watch time: 1 min | Proximity is power
Choose your circle, change your life
If you want to get better at tennis, you don’t play with someone at your level.
You play with someone playing at a higher level. Someone who challenges you. Someone who forces you to grow.
That’s how life works too.
You grow through proximity. You rise—or fall—to the level of the people around you.
You see, proximity is power.
Not just because of influence—but because of identity. Who you spend time with is who you become. Who you spend time with determines what you believe is possible for your life.
I’ve seen this firsthand. Early in my career, I was invited to join a group called The Scorpions, organized by one of my dearest friends, Peter Guber—a wildly successful entrepreneur, storyteller, and the former CEO of Sony Pictures.
The name sounded intense, but it was really just a group of high-level leaders—people with private planes and billion-dollar businesses—who came together to brainstorm, collaborate, and challenge each other to think bigger.
At first, I felt totally out of place.
I wasn’t on their level—yet. It stretched me financially. It stretched my comfort zone.
But I knew: This is how I grow.
And what I gained from that group—the ideas, the strategies, the friendships—was priceless.
To this day, many of those people are still some of my closest friends and mentors.
Here’s the truth:
Sometimes we shy away from rooms we belong in—because we’re afraid we don’t measure up.
But if you want to live an extraordinary life, you have to stretch. You have to step into spaces that raise your standards, challenge your thinking, and expand your vision.
So I’ll ask you:
1. Who are you spending time with?
2. Are they inspiring you to grow—or keeping you where you are?
3. And just as important: Who are you in proximity with? Are you showing up in a way that lifts, encourages, and elevates those around you?
We were never meant to grow alone.
We grow in community. We grow in challenge.
We grow through proximity.
Here’s to communities that grow us,
